The Sound of Cicadas

The Sound of Cicadas is a short poetic ethnography following the ageing crew of Wakioki-maru, a teichiami (fixed-net) fishing boat based out of the village of Nakanami, Toyama Prefecture, Japan. Shot over the course of six weeks, it forms part of That Time is Coming, an unfinished body of written, video and photographic work about speculative futures in the rapidly depopulating coastal municipality of Himi. With discourses around depopulation and climate change based largely on statistics, what do residents think the future might look, sound and feel like? And where are those possible futures already emerging?

Further ethnographic fieldwork for this project was postponed, then cancelled, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
